Council of Unions & Student Programs Leadership Institute (September 5-7, 2012 @Wenatchee Convention Center) The Council for Unions and Student Programs presents an exciting student leadership experience.  This conference has been developed as a leadership conference tailored to meet the needs of our student leaders.  This conference has two primary focuses:

  • To reduce the duplication of leadership training at our own campuses by assembling together a comprehensive leadership training institute. It provides the same leadership curriculum for all student leaders, rotating through tracks that include Ethics, Communication, Diversity, and Leadership Development.
  • Finding regional local talent that fits a community college budget, to minimize the expense of traveling to future regional conferences that may not be in the Northwest, we include a programming element to the leadership conference to enhance our knowledge of regional local talent.

Legislative Academy:  Fall (Late October/Early November) The original 24-hour Legislative conference focuses on Legislative messaging and communicating with legislators in conjunction with other CTC constituents.

Strategic Networking Academy: Winter (Mid-January). This drive-in, half day training  is designed to strategically put student teams in place to talk about legislative and Student White Paper issues, anticipate upcoming hearings, and to strategically recruit students to follow legislative issues with the goal of increasing CTC Student Voice in the state legislature.

  • Become oriented to the forthcoming State Legislative Session and build awareness about tools available for tracking issues and developments that involve the community colleges
  • Develop a Legislative Action plan for your school
  • Learn in teams how to strategize for specific legislative action based on your representatives and the legislative district of your college
  • Increase student understanding of the legislative process for entire CTC system and increase civic engagement
  • Connect students to roles of advocacy in all major CTC legislative initiatives
  • Establish network for emergent student participation needs during the legislative session

Student Voice Academy: (May 11-12, 2012 @ Shoreline Community College) Opening the academy subsists of a panel to include a trustee, student services commission representative, state board staff member, and community and technical college president discussing the recent legislative session and critical issues that moved forward or died. Plans for the upcoming year will be shared. The Voice Academy is different from the Legislative Academy in that students will platform on vital issues, present to the group, and determine the top 3-5 central issues that will be developed into a white paper during the day and into the evening. The white paper will move forward to the State Board and other significant state groups for development and incorporation into individual college legislative platforms for 2010-2011. The experience will focus on real live issues and dialogue to continue during the 2010-2011 academic year.
