Join us Thursday, April 14 for a workshop on Emotional Intelligence in the Workplace & Beyond (2 pm in Student Activities), conducted by Mike Spezia, Advertising & Marketing Director of the Daily World. Here is a description of the workshop:

Emotional Intelligence in the Workplace and Beyond: Today’s public emotional epidemic is ready for leaders to learn how to manage others. Learn why emotional intelligence skills are critical to success at work and home; and why these same skills are more important to job performance than any other leadership skill.

Mike Spezia is the Advertising & Marketing Director of the The Daily World and affiliate publications, President of the Aberdeen Revitalization Movement (ARM), active board member of both the Grays Harbor Chamber of Commerce and Mediation & Settlement Center, member of the Leadership Grays Harbor Steering Committee and involved in several community projects.

Library: Research Database

We’ve just added IRIS 4-2: Information and Research Instruction Suite for Two Year Colleges to our Information Literacy page .

This is a self-paced tutorial for information literacy instruction. It was initially developed by Librarian Kitty Mackey of Clark College, with funding from a grant from the Distance Learning Council of Washington.

If you make assignments involving information research IRIS will almost certainly provide support for your efforts. We in the Spellman Library have been editing IRIS to incorporate GHC-specific examples, so it presents both general principles which students can use elsewhere after completing their studies here, and also specific guidance for using GHC’s library. That editing will continue—but there is no reason you can’t begin to incorporate part or all of these lessons into your classes.

I request just one thing—give us your opinion and tell us what works.

Day of Silence – April 14

The GSA (Gay/Straight Alliance) on campus has been working very hard this year to educate and advocate for anti-bullying and harassment of the LGBTQ community in schools.

The GSA is participating in the Day of Silence on April 14th on our campus. Students will be tabling in the HUB on April 11th-14th to have people sign up to participate. On April 14th there will be stickers, pencils to write with and Silence cards explain that students are participating in this event.

At 2:00 pm in the HUB there will be a Breaking the Silence event where students will break their pencils and share their experiences from the day. A potluck and Night of Noise will follow in the HUB.

The official color of the Day of Silence is RED. I know that many staff/faculty/exempt cannot participate in being silent all day but you can show your support by wearing red that day to let the students know that you are an ally of the cause.

Please be mindful of the faces of the students who are being quiet on campus. The whole day is about raising awareness about the people that would be missing from our lives because they ceased to exist. Many LGBTQ individuals take their lives forever silencing themselves because they could no longer endure the harassment/bullying.

First CCC Meeting of Spring Quarter will be held on Tuesday, April 5 at 2 pm in the Student Activities Conference Room. Following this meeting there will be a S&A Budget School for any club members.

S&A Budget Schools: Tuesday, April 5 at 3 pm (following CCC Meeting), or Wednesday, April 6 at 9 am or 3 pm.

All S&A Budget Schools are being held in the Student Activities Conference Room.

S&A Budget Requests: Due April 14 at 3 pm to asghc-finance@chokermail.ghc.edu

NO LATE BUDGET REQUESTS WILL BE ACCEPTED. I have attached the 11-12 S&A Budget Request. Let us know what questions you might have!

Budget Hearings: Starting April 4, sign-up for a 15-minute budget hearing time slot (April 18 from 1-4, or April 19 from 4-5 pm) on my door!
